It can feel scary to put your real thoughts and opinions out online. Earlier in my career I couldn’t do it. Just too terrifying to be judged, yet I still yearned to be seen. Today though, I’m feeling more confident and am excited to share why exploring in public can be the next building in public.
So what’s building in public? I’ve been getting back into Twitter the last few months and one inspiring theme is called #buildinpublic. So far it is mostly startup founders I’ve seen do it, where they say I’m building X thing and it is early, or just an idea. They take you along for the journey by being courageous and going against our instincts to wait until something is done often to avoid judgement.
What happens? They get good conversations on their idea, share out wins, and it can actually help them build a team as showcased in this tweet by @paulyacobian who is a big advocate and leader in this space and recently hired a 3rd person from this approach.
It is really fun if you have any helper/cheerleader type nature in you as I do. Paul had no business until recently, started it and I’ve got to watch him grow his monthly revenue from it from 0 to 60k! Plus hire some people he must like who he met on Twitter. Pretty fun. Anyway, enough about that, look at the hashtag on Twitter if you want to learn more.
I want to share what I’m calling #exploreinpublic. This is the same idea but for those of us who don’t really know if we’re building anything yet. I’ve recently started doing this and it feels liberating to put a little more trust in others and my own ability to handle any potential reactions they may have. I’ve shared out my honest thoughts on what I want after a recent layoff as a Twitter thread, started this newsletter for exploratory musings, and want to do more. It is fun to collaborate and play with others as I’m discovering what’s next for myself. I’m writing this too in case you want to join or have a fun idea for yourself or others.
So, consider #exploreinplublic if it feels fun to you, feel free to share my explorings here or follow me on Twitter, and let me know your reactions if any to this post.
